Capsular contracture is a complication that can occur after breast augmentation or reconstruction surgery, causing discomfort and altering the breast's appearance. It occurs when the scar tissue capsule naturally forming around the implant tightens excessively, leading to firmness, pain, or changes in breast shape.
What is Capsular Contracture?
When a breast implant is placed, the body naturally forms a protective layer of scar tissue around it. Sometimes, this scar tissue, or capsule, becomes excessively tight and constricts the implant. This condition is called capsular contracture, and it can cause the breast to feel firm, become painful, or look misshapen.
The severity of capsular contracture is graded using the Baker system, from Grade I (minimal symptoms) to Grade IV (severe symptoms with significant discomfort and distortion).
